Subject
Fight for ER&M
Description
On April 1, 2019, the Coalition for Ethnic Studies, a student group that organized to support ER&M faculty and advocate to make the ER&M program a department, hosted a pop-up library in front of Sterling Memorial Library to raise awareness about the fight for ethnic studies. The exhibit featured two bookshelves with works by the 13 professors who withdrew from ER&M on March 29, 2019 to protest the institution’s lack of support for the program—as well as works by some of the 41 scholars who have left the program since its inception in 1997. CES asked passersby, including students and professors, to complete the prompt, “We need ER&M because...” They wrote their answers on whiteboards, and CES took pictures of them with their responses. The pictures were posted on the CES Facebook page and spread on social media to raise awareness about the personal, intellectual, and political importance of ethnic studies.
